Ever since hearing about Taylor Swift's vintage diamond ring, I have been on the lookout for cocktail rings. These are large carat occasional wear rings that are meant to be noticed across the room.
A piece showed up at Sotheby's that I am particularly interested in.

The star of the show is the 18 carat oval shaped amethyst. These stones are not particularly valuable but can sell for around $30/carat at this weight it is likely a $600 stone. The diamonds at near colorless with small inclusions are similar to what I purchased as part of an anniversary band and are on the order of $200-$300. The 18K yellow gold is a bit of a wild card. Subtracting out the weight of the amethyst, diamonds and onyx at about 25 total carats (5 grams), we are left with about 20 grams of 18K gold, this works out to about 0.5 ounces. With spot at $4000, this could be $1500 in gold weight. The vintage nature of the ring is a wild card and the Sotheby's mark up is a wild card. I feel like I am paying a significant premium, but not crazy for a signature piece.
