I first posted about a home gym back in November, 2007. At that time, my conclusion was that it was
typically not worth assembling a home gym, given the ease of access of
commercial gyms. If you live in more
secluded areas, I guess this could be more of an issue.
However this past weekend, I came across a commercial Cybex
flat bench at a garage sale and was instantly hooked. It was listed for $25 which I thought was a
very fair price. The flat bench along
with a set of dumbbells would be the perfect supplement to any home training I
would be interested in doing. I still
plan to workout primarily at the gym, but being able to do some triceps kickbacks,
chest exercises, and bent over rows is a pretty nice supplement to simply doing
push-ups and sit-ups.
I did some research today on the internet and the current
model retails for $425 and used models like mine have auction prices of $60-$70. That made me feel better about the prices,
although mine is a pretty scuffed up. As
I have waited 5 years to get the bench, I am not going to rush out and get the
dumbbells. However if I can find
dumbbells in the range of 10 cents/pound to 25 cents/pound I will certainly
pick up some weights in the range from 15 pounds to 40 pounds.
