Tight Calf

As I was on my “long run” last Sunday August 3rd, I felt my calf starting to tighten up.  I assumed it was because of the ride I had done Saturday and didn’t give it much further thought.  As it failed to loosen up, I decided to turn around at 2.5 miles.  A five mile run would be a reasonable distance and give me some confidence for my Olympic distance triathlon on the 17th.

With about a mile left to go, my left calf just locked up.  Stretching didn’t help, walking didn’t help, nothing.  Had it not been so early in the morning (and had I had my phone with me), I would have called my wife to come get me.  As it turned out, I hobbled back in and put on some compression gear.

It was starting to feel better and Wednesday, I got out of a short bike ride with no issues.  I continued my swim routine and wasn’t feeling out of sorts at all.  Friday, I decided to test it.  I warmed up with some jump rope and then headed off for my usual 3.3 mile loop.  Not two blocks into it, I started to feel it tighten up and decided I better give it another week.  I did 30 minutes on the elliptical machine without incidence.

Yesterday, I decided to again forego running and did 40 minutes on the elliptical machine.  It felt fine, but it does not feel right.  I will continue to take it easy and hopefully “test” it again on Friday.  The other option is to show up race morning and see how things go.  I am confident in the swim and bike and plan to run/walk the 10K.

Ouch...have you tried taking salt/potassium pills like Endurolytes before the run?
