The family recently had an occasion to be in Crested Butte,
Colorado. The last time, I was there was
a for a mountain biking race (Rage in the Sage) during the summer time. The area is just as beautiful in the winter
time. Being winter and being with the
kids, we stayed at a hotel. The
Elevations Resort and Spa is a really nice facility. Apparently it was even more in its heyday,
but we were impressed by the staff, the rooms and the amenities. It is situated just off of the Red Lady
Express Lift with great access to beginner runs and the magic carpets. The amenities we took advantage of included
the pool, hot tub, sauna, and free DVD rentals for the kids. They also had a terrific weight room, which I
should have brought some clothes to try out.
The ski area itself was perfectly suited to our needs. Kids under 12 skied free and they offer a
military rate of $29. My 5 year old
preferred to stay on the shorter Pine Magic Carpet and was starting to get a
little bit of a wedge going, but it was mostly straight down. My 12 year old did not miss a beat from last
year. She tried out the magic carpet and
then we did a few runs down the bunny hill from the Peachtree Lift. After skiing with the girls, I took a couple
of trips up the Red Lady Express and enjoyed the beginner terrain
available. They had recently opened the
East River Express Lift so the crowds were pretty small where we were skiing.
The drive out and back is a bit of a slog, but we had great
travel conditions down and back.
Everybody on the mountain was really friendly and that was really nice
to see. They are a lot of great spots to
eat as well. We enjoyed take out from
the Avalanche Bar & Grill.
Finally our occasion was a really well done event at the
Club at Crested Butte. It was a really
nice facility surrounded by some really nice homes. While activities were starting up, I noticed
that they had a great workout facility as well including a lap pool.
