Jeep Cherokee

I am a little surprised that I have not posted on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee until now (January 29, 2024).  I purchased this new on January 17, 2015 and have enjoyed the vehicle.  It is comfortable and drives well.  The exterior and interior have met my expectations with only minor cosmetic issues.  It was purchased for $25,000 and I opted for a lifetime extended warranty that was an extra $1,500 at the time.

Maintenance has included regular oil changes, cabin air filters, engine air filters and wiper blades.  At 96,000 miles, I am on my third battery and third set of tires.

There have also been some odd parts that have broken/gone missing like engine air filter disconnect and AC test access door cover.

Out of the ordinary repairs have included the liftgate (2015, 2023), rear differential (2019), radio head unit (2019), exhaust sensor (2019), Idle bent tensioner, idler pulley, serpentine belt (2021).  Some of these were covered by the 3 year, 36,000 mile bumper to bumper.  The rear differential was covered by the 5 year, 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  Everything else has been covered by the extended warranty.  The serpentine belt is designed to wear out and was not covered.

Today, it is in the shop for a radiator leak and they are going to repair and output shaft seal (driveshaft seal) and the both the driver and passenger control arms.  The output shaft seal was leaking.  The issue with the control arms was detected during the test drive.  I am beyond impressed at the attention to detail that the dealership is providing.

They recommended a fuel service ($100) and brake flush ($100).  I will likely knock each of these out at my next oil changes.

Approaching 100,000 miles, I will be due to replace the spark plugs for $750 and possible the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve for another $100.

The sum total of the repairs would be $1500 + $500 + $1000 = $3000 which would push me past wanting to own the vehicle.  The KBB value is down to $9,000.

UPDATE:  1/17/2025

As my Jeep was at 108,700 miles, I decided to go ahead and have the spark plugs replaced.  This is recommended at 100,000 miles.  The dealership was significantly more expensive than Firestone ($750 vs $600).  They also recommend a fuel system service for $300 (vs $150 at Firestone).  I went ahead and approved them both since it was already going to be in the shop for the Liftgate recall.

During inspection, it was noticed that the right front strut was leaking oil and needs to be replaced and the radiator was leaking (again).  Fortunately both of these should be covered by the warranty.  Replacing the strut would be a $750 job at the dealership.

With the strut replacement, the technician recommended an alignment for $180.  While it is a reasonable price, I feel like I am going to be in for strut issues every six months and may try to ride it out.  If it is really pulling in one direction or if the handling is off, I will likely get the alignment at Firestone with a warranty so that I can bring it back in for free over the next 2 years.
