Social Networking - Part II

I have recently been poking around with more interest in social networking. I started with the most obvious sites for myself such as LinkedIn and Facebook. A profile is very easy to create and then begins the tedium or is it excitement of looking for connections. Searches on LinkedIn are pretty easy and I need to make a concerted effort to methodically working through my current and past colleagues and classmates. I guess it is worthwhile connecting to friends as well because you never know when you are going to need to leverage your connections.

Facebook has been less interesting. Similar to LinkedIn, it is very easy to set up a profile, but more tedious to assemble a network of friends. Again the intent of being connected is a curious one as I received a number of friend requests from high school classmates whom I have not been in contact with for nearly 20 years. As far as extended family it is kind of interesting to know where everybody is and what they are doing.

Sites like Meetup have the potential to create more value as it would be nice to meet local folks with similar interests and hobbies.

I have not ventured into MySpace as it seems it is geared towards a younger crowd. I have similarly bypassed Twitter as I am not that concerned with anybody’s activities, nor am I willing to update my minute to minute goings on.
