Off Training Week

The weather had been cooperating so well that I had forgotten I lived in Colorado. The past week has been marked by significant snowfall and that doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. While outdoor training is still very possible for most folks, I just don’t enjoy being cold and wet by choice.

To that end I have been back indoors. I have a stationary bike set up in the basement and am comfortable running on a treadmill, but it just isn’t the same. Psychologically it is more challenging for me to complete a base workout indoors. My mind wanders and my intensity wanes. As a result last week I only managed one run and one bike workout, but I did manage 3 swim workouts.

I consider that an off week, as my swim intensity leaves much to be desired. I am currently browsing “Swimming Fastest” by Ernest Maglischo. It is a very complete treatise on swimming. At any rate, I am getting some good ideas for fartlek style training to break up workouts and make an effort towards speed. Often I feel more winded than physically tired, when I try to pick up the pace.

This week has started off pretty well and I did manage to get in a couple of miles on the treadmill, which I will repeat for my second run workout of the week if necessary. Biking is a whole other animal as I am targeting 50 minute plus workouts. Regardless of the situation that is a lot of time to pass indoors, even flipping through television channels. I might try to take some quick 30 minute outdoor spins and supplement with indoor training.
