He’s Just Not That Into You

This weekend, I headed to a late showing at the discount theater by the house. I originally planned on playing cards, but could not get out of the house until after 9:00 PM, which makes for a difficult next morning with 2 children. At any rate, I was pleasantly surprised by He’s Just Not That Into You (HJNTIY) and would recommend to movie goers who enjoy romantic comedies.

The premise is simple enough and wanders through the lives of a half dozen couples with situations from looking for love, to dating, to living together to married. The movie is not all that well done with scenes jumping somewhat erratically and the effort to link the characters who are friends of friends is pushy.

There are some very well portrayed stereotypes. My favorites were the hopeful romantic who knows that he’ll call (Ginnifer Goodwin) and the paranoid wife who is sure her husband is up to something (Jennifer Connelly). The cast itself was pretty good, but I grow weary of Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore. I am ready for the next wave of 30 something romantic comedy heroines.

While I set out to be entertained, I did get some nuggets of truth to bring home. If things are going well, don’t push too hard to make them better as the wheels could fall off. If something doesn’t smell right, there is probably something to that and it is worth investigating. The movie also made me appreciate my own marriage. I am present and satisfied with my marriage and our life goals are in alignment. I am relieved that our relationship has endured and blossomed over the past 2 years of child rearing.

I did not enjoy the movie much either- all of the scenarios seemed forced and some of the scenes were excruciating to watch. As far as marriage, I think enjoying the good times together makes a marriage good, but it is getting through the tough times that can make a marriage great. How you get through those times, that is :-)
