Open Water Swimming

I hope to kick off my multisport season with the June 3rd Stroke & Stride. Last year I opted for the 750m swim and 5K run and had a great experience. This year I want to tackle the 1500m swim and 5K run. I am more confident in my swimming strength and intend to work my way up to 2-3 hour competitions. Unfortunately I have not had a chance to benchmark my open water swimming since August 2009. Last year I was in the water for 2 practice sessions and 3 races. I am hoping to get more practice sessions in this year as the Masters team will occasionally practice at Chatfield. Also Grant Ranch and Union Reservoir have proved to be convenient venues as well. Boulder Reservoir is another option and BAM’s website reports that COMSA members are being offered 2 free open water swims. I understand that open water swimming is also available at Aurora Reservoir and Cherry Creek Reservoir, but I have not explored those options.

I unfolded my wetsuit and soaked it in the bathtub last weekend. It was a little snug and going through my logs, I realized that I was 3 pounds heavier than when I picked it up last year. The range of motion and everything else felt fine. Taking it off was a nightmare and reminded me to pull the body glide and warm wear cap out of storage as well.

Hopefully the water at Grant Ranch is less intimidating than it was this time last year.

I was thinking about going to Grant Ranch this weekend too, but we'll see. I'm still thinking it might be a little cold! I'll be looking forward to hearing how it goes for you!

It was a lot cold for me. I bobbed around and swam a few hundred yards along the shore before calling it quits. There were a couple of guys who started before me and swam around the lake. A couple of more people were arriving as I was leaving. Besides the temperature the water is fine (same visibility and shore conditions as I remember from last year). I guess I just need to toughen up.
