Relics Ranch, Wimberley, TX

This past weekend, my family all got together to celebrate my Dad's 75th birthday party.  One of my sisters organized a stay at the Relics Ranch in Wimberley, TX and it was surprisingly comfortable for 7 adults and 4 kids to enjoy a property away from the hustle and bustle, yet still comfortably appointed.

We flew into San Antonio on Wednesday night and explored downtown Thursday morning before driving to Wimberley.  We enjoyed visiting the Alamo and taking a boat tour along the downtown river walk,

The property was pretty incredible with a main house and guest house connected by a patio.  The highlight of the trip was the pool which the girls thoroughly enjoyed.  A close second was feeding hay to the donkey and horses.  The kitchen was well appointed and we enjoyed grilling one night an cooking Mexican another night.  The butcher block table would accommodate 14 people, but as many of you know, nobody ever eats at the same time with kids.

Downtown Wimberley was cute and we took the time to explore the shops and indulge in some ice cream and frozen yogurt.  We celebrated on Saturday night with dinner at Trattoria Lisina.  I had one of the specials, a mushroom risotto with white truffle oil.  It was really good and the service was excellent.

After check out, we swung by my sister's place in Austin before driving to Houston for our flight out the next day.  My wife has family in Houston so it was nice to visit with them and also get some Mexican food at Chuy's.

The flight back was less fun as Southwest was delayed due to weather over Denver.  On arrival, we were parked on the tarmac for 15 minutes waiting for a gate.  Finally, it took forever for our car seats to come through oversize baggage.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip and I am warming up to the whole "Vacation Rental by Owner" concept.
